Alter Aeon Game Updates

Category: Accessible Games

Post 1 by Dentin (Veteran Zoner) on Saturday, 25-Aug-2012 15:39:01

For those of you who haven't heard of it, Alter Aeon is a huge multiclass role playing game set in a medieval/fantasy world. It has a lot of blind friendly features built into the server, and there are several player contributed soundpacks in addition to native support for complex aliases and the MSP protocol.

We've been making continuous updates on it since 1995, and I'd like to use this thread to post new updates from time to time.

This month there's been a lot of updates. Updates for Aug 25, 2012:

- The areas of Mendelius' cave and Qoorik's lair have been updated to make them less dangerous to solo players. A lot of new monsters have been added to the lower levels.

- A lot of new sounds have been added (this probably won't affect you if you're using the Mush-Z soundpack.)

- Add sprompt command to display your prompt even if it's turned off.

- Add lecho command to make scripting easier.

- We've added a new channel moderation system to hopefully make channel moderating more fair and less likely to cause drama.

- Really high level players won't drag down group exp as much as they used to.

- Restarting your character now gives everyone the same fairly young age.

- A new, experimental soulstone market has been added, to allow quick and easy buying and selling of soulstones. Use the 'smarket' or 'soulmarket' commands for help and usage.

- Necromancers above level 30 now get alternating int and wis boosts to
stat caps for each level, similar to mages and clerics.

- Make demon familiars a little more powerful with higher soulstone level.

- Open more player shops and improve the shop unsold listings for owners.

- Add 'help search' command, to make specific help pages easier to find.

- You can now buy the ability to use bank commands from anywhere in the game for 1000 credits.

- Add the 'unfollow' and 'disband' commands to help disband groups.

You can get connect help and links to soundpacks from our main web site at:

Alter Aeon Updates - Oct 03, 2012

Here's a list of the major Alter Aeon changes since the last update:

- Major reworks to clans and clan member ranks. There are now 9 different ranks and promote/demote commands, as well as clan activity counters for each player.

- Fix a half dozen minor pk bugs that allowed minions to kill each other in safe rooms.

- Improvements to the new avatar and moderator systems.

- Add three new advanced poisons for thieves: dragonbane, insecticide, and herbicide. These poisons are extremely effective against creatures of each type.

- Add two new low level thief skills, 'dirt throwing' and 'fast waking'.

- Rearrange the low level thief skills to give low level thieves combat and useful skills earlier.

- Players can now buy extra autobrew slots.

- A lot of server lag improvements.

- Minor fixes and improvements to a bunch of things, including the recently added warrior skills, the soulstone market, and necromancer bone spells.

- Shadowfax has added a new level 30 area, the East Thalenwood Forest. It has been added on the southern road, east of Nakato's valley.

- A new article that discusses the warrior "War Cries" skill group has been posted to the web site. This article covers the basics of the skills and gives some general tips on using them.

- There is also a new article on character alignment. This article covers everything from the basics to strategies on how to change alignment and which alignments to pick.

You can find the articles at:

It's time for Alter Aeon's annual Halloween Havoc! The action starts on Monday, October 29, and continues until midnight on the 31st. Our preliminary schedule has several area openings, a number of voluntary pk events, pumpkin cannon contests, and other things.

Monday, Oct 29:

On monday, we will have the official release of Castle Kraftrager, on the island of Archais. Also known as the drake tower, this zone has a couple of interesting quests and lots of new beasties to fight.

Tuesday, Oct 30:

On tuesday, a new addition to the fire plane, the untamed wilds, will be released. This area is an extension to the tunnels and caverns below the fire giant keep, and is intended for very high level players.

Wednesday, Oct 31:

On wednesday, a handful of areas will be released on the western edge of Archais. The island archipelago has several new quests and deeds, including a cursed temple and hang gliding.

In addition, today, a new area was opened north of the Great Desert, near the Ash Mountains on the mainland. This area has many undead and elemental creatures, and should provide high level players with an interesting experience.

On all three days, we will be running arena and other events every few hours to give those in different time zones a chance to participate and say hello. We'll have novelty items and prizes for everyone.

We hope to see you there!

Alter Aeon's Halloween Havoc is almost over! All of the new areas have been opened, and events will continue until midnight tonight. The new areas are:

The Archais Archipelago, a set of level 20 areas with several quests, a cursed temple to explore, boats to sink, hang gliders to fly, and items to steal.

Castle Kraftrager southwest of Seaside on Archais, which is also a level 20 area with many quests and even some fame!

The untamed wilds is a high level area below the fire giant caverns on the fire plane. This area is suitable for groups of high level players and is not recommended for lower level or inexperienced players.

The other events for today are available to players of almost all levels. These include keeping the pumpkinhead population under control, clearing the game of booby trapped pumpkins, pk arena events, and the last pumpkin cannon contest. Farthest three pumpkin cannon distances today will each receive a free pumpkin themed item restring.

See you there!

Alter Aeon is having a high level Death March tomorrow, Saturday November 10th!

If you haven't been on a death march, they really do live up to their name. An immortal will be leading the death march groups and tanking some of the most difficult monsters on the game - but while the immortal cannot die and will shield the players from the worst attacks, he will not otherwise help. It is up to the other players in the group to survive the residual attacks and actually defeat the creatures you encounter.

Sometimes this ends well for everyone, and sometimes it ends bad for everyone. Whether the group or the mob, something is going to die!

The first march will start at 10 AM server time (1 PM EST), and the second one will start at 3 PM server time (6 PM EST). Depending on demand and timezone, we may run a third one later in the day. Everyone is welcome to join, just be aware of the risks. See you there!

Alter Aeon Updates - Nov 15, 2012

Here's a list of the major Alter Aeon changes since the last update. You can get a more complete list with the 'changes' command, or online at http://alteraeon.com:8080/changelog

New Areas:

Castle Kraftrager and the Archais Archipelago, both level 21 areas, have been opened near Seaside on Archais.

A new level 32 area, the city of Koralia's Heart, has been opened on the mainland! It can be found west of Vandar and Southport.

A new very high level, the untamed wilds, has been opened on the lowest levels of the outer planar fire world, below the fire giant caverns.

A new very high level area, the Dust Sea, has been opened north of the Great Desert near the Ash Mountains.

New Game Features:

Add the 'gamble' command and a slot machine game that works with gold.

Show spell/skill learned percent on spells and skills commands.

Improved spam filtering for large groups.

Greatly increase player regen to reduce downtime.

Add a newbie 'gift' system, where mid and high level players can give new players gifts of gold or experience.

Add optional player accounts and email address verification. This lets you put your characters into an account and pool game credits.

If you buy practices with credits, you keep them all when you restart.

Make the bot detector less likely to trigger on blind clients.

Improve map command for blind players. There are now two extra map options, 'map old', which displays the old style map from a couple of years ago, and 'map explored' which shows the general exploration map that was recently added. The exploration information has been moved off of the main map command to reduce spam.

Thanks for playing!

Thanksgiving at Alter Aeon - Nov 22, 2012

Notice is a little late, but we're having a small Thanksgiving event today sponsored by the god Morpheus. Log in, hunt down some turkeys, and get a quest and a random quest item!

We'll also be having a second, larger event at the beginning of next week so as not to interfere with your holidays. I'll post updates here when they're available.

Happy hunting!

As a finisher for this years Thanksgiving, we'll be running a small event for the next two days, from Monday Nov 26th through Tuesday Nov 27th:

Wild turkeys have overrun a farm, and you can help clean up the infestation! Players who want to participate in this event can enter any of the portals placed in Vemarken, Naphtali, Gad's Landing, Dragon Tooth, and Ralnoth. Turkey feathers can be traded in for minor items, and cooked turkeys can be donated to some of the townspeople's less fortunate.

This event should be suitable for all levels.

There are three special event quests to get, and Gandor will periodically be running a group through the boss mob. See Gandor for other event updates and details.

Dentin,
I've recently gotten back into alter, and I'm having a great time. The new stuff is awesome!

Post 16 by Dentin (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 01-Jan-2013 22:58:51

With the start of the new year, we have four new areas open to players:

The Fire world of Khinzhai - Level 25

This area expands and maps out the surface of the outer planar fire world, adding a mid level quest and some more backstory on the history of the place. This area was started over a dozen years ago, and was completed by Morpheus and Inessa.

The Tomb under Nueva Granada - Level 32

A set of ancient tombs has been discovered in the ruins beneath the colony of Nueva Granada, which lies Northwest of the Oriental City. This area adds a lot of undead creatures as well as several quests for high level players. This area was built by Shadowfax and Draak.

The Necropolis of Q'monmwer - Level 36

At the north end of the Dust Sea lies the ancient Necropolis of Q'monmwer. While dead and unoccupied now, the legendary guardians, golems, and machines created of old still remain, guarding and maintaining the ancient city. This area was built by Shadowfax and Draak.

The Plane of Chaos Dragon Lair - Level 36

This very high level area is near the castle in the plane of chaos and contains a wide assortment of minions and other creatures in the service of the resident dragon. This area was built by Kagome and Shadowfax.

We also have the upcoming 18th anniversary event in two weeks. Have fun and happy new year!

I've put together an Alter Aeon year in review article for 2012, written from my perspective:

http://www.alteraeon.com/articles/2012_year_in_review_dentin.html

There's an overview of the various server features, new areas, and some question and answer from the players about the future as well as the past. Since it's my view on things, it's probably very different from what you'd expect as a player. If you're a fellow game programmer, you'll probably find it interesting.

The official 18th anniversary of Alter Aeon is the 15th of January, and we'll be having several days of events this year:

Starting Tuesday, January 15th, I'll be leading a handful of tours and death marches for anyone who wants to join. I'll be picking zones I'm familiar with and know some history on, and we may have some other gods willing to tell stories about their areas as well.

Starting Wednesday, we'll be running the 1995 version of the game server on port 4000. I'm going to leave it up for a week to allow people to explore and run some leveling contests.

At the end of the week, we'll be running a three day event with pieces of the main storyline on each of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The theme for this year is 'frost demon storm', with merely continent wide destruction instead of the universe ending peril of previous years.

We hope to see you there!

Post 23 by Dentin (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 15-Jan-2013 0:57:29

As an update to the Alter Aeon anniversary celebration, here's the schedule for the next two days:

Tuesday, Jan 15 - Old area tours

Dentin (and possibly other gods) will be running tours of some older areas, complete with many monster killings and color commentary. The tour schedule is:

10 am PST - Fire World of Khinzhai, all levels except the surface

1 pm PST - Wyvren's Hell, a very old offline area

4 pm PST - Kefka's Castle Dragnok

7 pm PST - Abyrimoch and some areas under Dentin's Moria

10 pm PST - Kefka's haunted mansion

Wednesday, Jan 16 - 1995 server version contests

The 1995 server version will be started around 10:00 am PST, and the various contest types will be announced and posted at 12:00 pm PST.

The most up to date schedule can be found in-game with the 'show event' command. Thanks go out to all the players and builders who helped keep the game running for nearly two decades!

Post 24 by Dentin (Veteran Zoner) on Monday, 21-Jan-2013 13:01:20

The 18th anniversary events are finally all completed, and I'd like to thank everyone for participating as well as give a rundown of all six days of events:

- The Tuesday area marches went really well, and I got to play tour guide for several areas nearly two decades old.

- The contests on the 1995 server port were a real hit, with a lot of people trying it out (and a lot of people giving up.) As old and crusty as the original version of AA was, it really was a great game to start from and build on.

- Scribe and Grolantor's expansion to their woodland retreat has been very popular, with people still trying to work their way through all the details and deeds.

The main event ran across all three days from Friday to Sunday, ending with a massive assault upon the ice fortress to banish the invading frost demon. In the course of their victory, the players had to regain knowledge of an ancient, lost wardbreaking spell, which is now a permanent addition to the game.

Here's to another year of Alter Aeon!

It's Valentine's Day, and the Alter Aeon Valentine's Day update is now live! We have new features, areas, quests and more:

- We've added a 'travelling merchant' gold gambling game. This game has a lot less variation in payouts than the three rings game, for more conservative players.

- There's a new level 14 area on the island of Kordan, the Haunted Hills. Located on the west side of the famous Haunted Highway, the hills hold the secret of the haunting and the ancient curse that drives it.

- There's also a new level 24 area on the island of Archais, the tinker gnome colony. The gnomes live on the north side of Gad's Mountain, near the the Inn of the Lonely Wanderer.

- The planar research guild has opened their main offices in the city of Gad's Landing on the island of Archais. The guild has several jobs available for mid level explorers.

- Add new level 31 mage spell, 'group teleport'. This allows entire groups to risk life and limb together, instead of just single players.

- Open the 17th anniversary zone in Redferne's Palace. This extremely high level area is intended for groups of high level players, and requires ward breaking to complete.

- Open the 18th anniversary zone in the Ash Mountains. This extremely high level area is intended for large groups of high level players. It requires ward breaking to enter the main fortress.

Happy hunting!

Alter Aeon April Updates!

There have been a lot of updates and additions in the last couple of months. New things since the last update (in February):

- There is a new level 24 area, Fort Magnesia, between the Viking village raid and Wyvren forest on the island of Archais. This area was created by the builder Bamboo.

- There is a new level 23 area, the Smugglers Cove, in the ocean west of Seaside on the island of Archais. This area was created by the builders Inessa and Morpheus.

- A new level 30 area, the Celestial Circle, has been added in the forest just east of Ralnoth, on the Mainland. This area was created by the builder Draak.

- A number of quests and creature updates have been add to Ralnoth, thanks to the builder Draak.

- The Abandoned Citadel in the mountains near Orton has been updated.

- The Taber Brothers Carnival is once again open and currently set up between Seaside and Gad's Landing on the island of Archais. This area is now level 24.

- A large number of mainland areas, including the extremely high level Underwater Ruins, have been updated and releveled.

- The quest setup on the mid-level island of Kordan has been updated and improved.

- There has been a massive change to the way that fame and experience are calculated. The new systems are more fair to high level players, and will make it easier for us to release future expansions and raise player level.

- Two new low level mage spells have been added, 'static blast' at level 2, and 'frostflower' at level 8. There is also a triggerable combination spell effect for using them in short succession.

Dentin, what will happen once I get level thirty-six in all five classes? I have Horg, who is my primary char, and he is almost there. What will become of him after I achieve all thirty-six? What doors will open to him?

Post 31 by Dentin (Veteran Zoner) on Sunday, 07-Apr-2013 11:07:02

Actually, Horg is really, really far away from 36 in all five classes. We have a sixth class coming out in the next year or two anyway, so that should give you something new to do when you do get there.

Post 32 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 07-Apr-2013 14:21:09

Oooo, a sixth class! I look forward to that, get Horg into the sixth class and have a total level of wow, two hundred sixteen! Keep em coming, Dentin!

Post 33 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 07-Apr-2013 15:04:09

I just thought of something odd. Whenever I cast bone armor on myself, I get exp. I know that when I become better at something, I'll get exp. But strangely enough, I get exp every time I cast bone armor on myself. Is it to reward Horg for taking the pain of the casting of the armor, or will it wear off eventually?

Post 34 by rat (star trek rules!) on Monday, 08-Apr-2013 10:50:15

It is possible if your hp is low enough that bone armor could kill you, also keep in mind casting that spell is taking pretty large risk if you look at the descriptions of the spell.

Post 35 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 08-Apr-2013 14:58:20

I know, but it is a nice experience boost when I was trying to level. I need that extra exp from that spell to level, so I am glad that happened. Plus, the exp goes up throughout the leveling process, which is amazing! I started at one level, getting 4800 per casting, then another lever I starg getting 5660 per casting.

Alter Aeon May 2013 Updates

As always we're continually adding new content and features to the game. If you haven't played Alter Aeon before, take a few minutes to come check us out - it's free to play, and new players are always welcome.

New areas added since the last update:

- The Forest of Brigands is a new high level area south and west of Cornia. As its name suggests, the forest is rife with bandits and monsters which sometimes prey upon travelers using the Eastern Trade Road. This area was created by Shadowfax.

- The Blue Mound is a new high level area north of Ralnoth. Giant insects have been found near it destroying the forest. This area was created by Draak.

- The Lotus Monastery is now open on the island of Archais. This is a level 24 area, and it contains a number of quests and deeds to complete for mid-high level players. This area was created by Morpheus.

Areas that have been updated:

- Ralnoth has been updated, adding quests and conversational strings to a most of the mobs. There are several strong quest lines between the city and the dwarven marketplace in Khal-Uktar to the southeast.

- The oriental city, Daigaku Tatami, has been updated similarly to Ralnoth and now also has a number of linkage quests. Both cities were updated by Draak.

- A number of old, high level areas have been releveled to take advantage of the new fame and group experience code, including places like the underwater ruins and Arcadia/Darcadia.

- The Labyrinth outside Jo'Kerin has been completely reworked. It's now harder, more confusing, has switches which change its layout, and is a big hit with higher level players.

As a final announcement, Kurek's excellent Mush-Z soundpack has been updated! Run the updater to check out the changes and make sure you're on the latest version. This version fixes a lot of outstanding bugs and should help make the experience a lot smoother.

Remember that if your updater doesn't connect, it might be too old. You may need to download a new one from the web site at: http://www.mush-z.com

If you'd like to sign up for our mailing list, just send send an email to: alteraeon+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Alter Aeon Solstice Event - Fire Plane Invasion!

Minor fire elementals have been found throughout the world for the past couple of weeks, and they have always been passive and fled when approached. However, they are now attacking on sight! Players are advised to take precautions when encountering them.

Since fire plane creatures continue to encroach upon the world, we can assume that what is taking place is no less than a prelude to a full scale invasion. The Church of Shadowfax is actively searching for a reasonable means of stopping the elementals at their source. They should have a solution very soon.

In the mean time, the Red Mage in the city of Zin continues to collect mephit leavings for use in this research. You can help by bringing him some.

The fire invasion counterattack will begin on Friday, June 21st 5 pm PST, which is 5 pm server time. After the event, the invasion areas will remain open over the weekend so that everyone has a chance to play through them. For more information on the event, please see the wiki page at:

Just a reminder, the December advent calendar runs until the end of the year, and you can get a gift from the server once a day until then. The gifts range from gold to credits and unique items that you can't get any other way.

The new druid class has now been available for about a week, and things are looking really good! People are having a lot of fun playing new characters based on druids, with some of them even up to level 20.

Lastly, don't forget that there's still the yearly anniversary event in january, after december is done. This will be our 19th anniversary, so it should be a big one.

See you there!
